i was just wondering what kind of music you guys listen to. i like alot of mainstream rock, hardcore punk, a little of everything. i love 311, but i am (like my name says)reborn, and its hard to find christian music that i will listen to. the christian bands i have heard and i like are switchfoot, blindside, 38th Parallel, etc. any recomendations on bands i may like would be great.

Contemporary stuff I dig includes some Tooth and Nail / Solid State bands like Zao and Extol, Stavesacre... some of the more extreme metal releases. The vocalist for Zao was also a tattoo artist, but I'm not sure if Zao is still together. I have a pretty sizeable collection of Christian death metal and industrial stuff, too. Lately, I've really been digging Soul Junk and other offbeat projects like The Danielson Family; Soul Junk in particular is really expanding the boundaries with some pretty experimental, cutting edge stuff, but is going into a hiphop direction with their last few records.

But I also really dig the classic black gospel harmony groups like the Golden Gate Quartet, the Swan Silvertones- and some of the rootsier, bluesy gospel stuff from folks like Blind Willie Johnson and some of the early white southern gospel groups like the Stamps, the Louvin Brothers, etc. There's a rich and fascinating heritage in gospel music that most Christians seem completely unaware of. It goes back way further than Larry Norman and Amy Grant.

its funny you mention ZAO. one of my really good friends was the lead singer for a small band of "screamers" called post tribulation bliss. he is in the navy now, and was tied into ZAO some how. i think he knew the band or something.

I have to mention my all-time favorite band: MxPx. You've prolly heard of them, and they're not for everyone, but they're definitely the most accepted Christian band in the punk scene. I also love Relient K which has a bit more poppy sound but more spiritual lyrics (ok, with the exception of some awesome songs like "Lion-O" about the Thundercats) and Pax 217 who is somewhere in between MxPx and Relient K.
My new favorite mainstream band is Sugarcult, though. Unfortunately, they don't get the kudos they deserve, but I think they're mad gravy.

Re: music anyone?

The issue of whether an Christian can enjoy secular music is a good topic- I can appreciate all kinds of artistic or creative expressions, even those that express views different than my own. I'm a Zappa fan to a geeky extent, even though I don't always agree with his opinions. I can respect his artistry and unique take on the world around him, even though he gets unnecessarily vulgar and it frustrates me that he never seemed to be able to distinguish genuine Christians from crafty televangelists and their misled flocks.

Useless Trivia: there was once a local Christian death metal band that called itself "Frank's Enemy" in response to Frank's apparent hostility towards religion. Too bad their music kinda sucked, because I thought their concept was pretty colorful.

On the other hand, I don't have to dismiss all good sense- I see "Art" like Andres Serrano's famous "P-ss Christ" photograph, and hear him in interview trying to say that his depicting a crucifix immersed in his own urine was a form of reverence to Christ ... and I formulate some definite opinions. First off, the photograph is really no visual masterpiece, it's just a big ugly closeup of the artist's tinkle in a jar. The only reason he has a career now, years later, is that this one pathetic piece got him so much publicty. The bad publicity and outrage of various religious groups only served to make this dip rich and famous.

I'm off on a tangent, but I suppose my point is that I get different things from different kinds of music. Secular music serves its purpose, and I get something extra enriching from Christian music, because I share the faith it expresses.

personally, i feel mewithouYou is one of the greatest bands ive heard, they are like slower hard rock stuff. but some other bands that might be good are ace troubleshooter, side walk slam, one-21,every mans hero, fighting jacks, emery is also a good one. all those bands are "christian" bands, though i believe a band isnt a christian per say, its the members and what they stand for that decides if you should listen to them. and also how muscially talented they are.

anyway, check out tooth and nail records, they have a lot of good bands that you could get some ideas from.

oh and danielson famile rocks.
