Cross Tattoo Interpretation

I've been looking for cross designs for a tattoo and I came across this design

As this being my first tattoo and being a Christian I looked into this design a little further. What I came across was this cross design being referenced to a design from a Gothic design.. I was wondering if anyone could give me a little more insight as to why this would be.

This design was actually tattooed on 2Pac as I found out researching deeper and I looked at a site detailing the meanings and it says its also Gothic related.

That design is used for what is Amaru Records. It is a label his mother made to release unreleased music.. just more info if anyone is interested

However, I came across this site

and its listed and included under Christian tattoo. The last thing I want to do is get a tattoo that by design is not what I meant for it to represent. I am a Christ lover and have exactly 0% desire to have any possibility of a gothic representation.

I like this design very much and if anyone could tell me why or why not this is a "Gothic" cross or what makes it gothic in nature I would be be very gratefull.

Man, if you wanna get a crucifix tatt then that one is just fine! There are a lot of different relations of styles but only one true meaning. Christ's sacrafice. However... if you do wanna delve a little deeper into some supposed backgrounds, here's a decent link from Wikipedia ]Christian Cross

We call that the "Tupac Cross" and have put hundreds of variations on clients. I try not to judge and have made efforts to understand "gangsta" culture and "thug life" but it still seems pretty repulsive to me. There is this connotation to this cross, although Tupac probably got the design from somewhere else, too - he didn't invent it.

"gangsta" culture and "thug life" is nothing more than glorified sin. Just like all the old gangster movies. A poor kid grows up and gets rich at the expense of others and in the process earns "respect" (rather fear) and all of a sudden his ego explodes. There is nothing acceptable about it. We need to be in prayer for the kids being brought up in a world which continues to glorify sin in the artistic and social realm, while apparantly condeming it in the legal realm.

Thank you for the replies. My intentions are to get a tattoo that represents my faith and belief in Christ which was why I was interested in the background of that cross.

Their could be nothing worse than relaying the wrong message. I am not condoning the "gangsta" lifestyle nor is anything related to that a part of my life. I simply am looking to get my first tattoo that signifies my rebirth in Christ.

After reading more into your link I saw that crosses in the time of Jesus sometimes were x-shaped. I am not too knowledgable about the symbolism of different crosses.

The cross bar and main body of the cross bare the crucifix design however I was wondering what the symbolism of the square design in the middle is. I keep getting links to a "Gothic Christian Cross" referenced to this design with the square in the middle.. After laughing at gothic and Christian linked in the same sentence I still want to make sure it bares a 100% religious [sign in to see URL] gangster or gothic or anything else

"Crucifix" is just another name for the "Cross" Man, like I said... if you want that one go for it. I understand if the recent popularity of that particular design changes your mind. However, you know what it means to you. And that's ALL that matters. I have a couple of tatts that are between me and Jesus. And that's all that matters. They're not there for display or critique, just for me and Him.

Re: Cross Tattoo Interpretation

In this case, gothic is refering to a time period in arcitecture and art, not the "Goth" culture as it is represented in moern-day america. I think in today's society it is easy to forget that words have different meanings in different cultural circles.

Re: Cross Tattoo Interpretation

that cross will be fine. unless u get it big in the middle of ur back, with EXODUS 1811 (which by the way isnt for the book of the bible) no one is going to think its supposed to be thuggish. it depends on how u represent urself. i kno there are different styles of tattoos for different lifestyles but if ur like a rock n roll, type guy, or even just a normal everyday kind of guy, ppl are going ot be able to tell by the way u walk talk and carry urself so theyre not gonna think ur being thuggish or gothic.

and the EXODUS 1811 is for the year Nat Turner led the slave revolt or somethin.
