Give me Liberty or give me death!!!..June 22nd 07

Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free,[a] and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. 2 Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. 3 And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.

What does this scripture mean to you? Does it mean that we are to follow the law? No. Does it mean that we are to abandon the law? No. So then what does it mean?

What Paul is saying in these passages is that it is not law, nor the freedom from it that will get us [sign in to see URL] faith and faith alone.

So now we [sign in to see URL] in what? Faith in that Jesus is who he says he is and that he accomplished what he came here to do. We know he accomplished his purpose her on earth because when he died on the cross his last words were...."it is finished".

Christ died to pay the price for our sins. Every sin we have ever commited. Every sin we will commit today. Every sin we will commit in the future. Because he died for us "we are free".

So now we ask the important [sign in to see URL] from what?

We are free from being a bondservant of the law. Read the entire chapter of Galatians 5 and then go back to Romans and read Romans [sign in to see URL] & 8.

Paul says that because Christ died we are free from the law and now bondservants of Christ. We are not longers slaves to the law but slaves to the spirit of God.

So when people come at you with "the levitical law" regarding [sign in to see URL] answer is easy. We as children of God and followers of Christ are no longer bound to the law of [sign in to see URL] are free to live as God convicts and leads us. Its not a cookie cutter answer and its not a [sign in to see URL] a freedom to find our individual freedom before God as those saved by [sign in to see URL] read Romans 14.

I would like to hear your thoughts on [sign in to see URL] chime in and lets dig in!

thanks and God bless!!

Awesome passage! Well put brother Jayme. How about we add to that the "Law and the Promise" found in Galatians 3:15-25. Don't miss that little word "until" in verse 19! Then the kicker in verse 24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by [sign in to see URL] Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

When I use these passages when talking with people I think it's important to mention that this does not give us licence to sin. Obedience is a biggie. It gets real tricky when people look at the tats as sin. Thank goodness for the Holy Spirit and His leading. I can honestly say that I have a true peace about my ink. It just bothers me sometimes when people use the "sin card" just because they don't agree.

Intresting stuff Jayme, thanks for getting it going.
In Christ,
Lowell

People the words above here are it!!!
If you are searching for the get down to it gospel, the above is it.

GREAT!!! TEACHING!!!
I love these veres. I remember the first time I truely understood what they mean. As a former Pharisee, like Saul/Paul these verses opened a whole new understanding of God and the relationship He desires.
It's not Jesus and rules.
It's not Jesus and church membership.
It's not Jesus and baptism.
It's not Jesus and gifts.
These are all good but....
It's Jesus only, and the relationship He brings so we can be with the Father Almighty.
GREAT !!! TEACHING !!!

Ditto doesn't really cut it does it? lol
But I think, unfortunately, Christians can get so caught up in the "obeying the law so as not to sin" aspect that they actually find comfort there. They find more comfort in the black and white of the law then they do the all consuming light and freedom that comes with following the Spirit.
One of my favorite verses that refers to Pharisees is in Matthew when Jesus was teaching in chapter 18, can't remember the exact verse though, and says "If the light you think you have is really darkness, how deep that darkness will be."
Great post Jayme emoticon and well said emoticon

we are free to serve others with our freedom, not gratify our desires. we are also slaves to Christ. tattooing is a freedom that some have, not all. If you cannot serve those around you for Christ with your tattoos then you should probably not be involved with them. thats my opinion anyways.
Be blessed brothers and sisters

Re: Give me Liberty or give me death!!!

I've found that in my personal disicpleship walk with the Lord that I find I need continual modification. Spiritual modification. He is the potter, I am the clay.

The desire to remain clay and not try to become the potter of my own self is the challenge.

We are called to have faith enough to allow Him to continue to be the potter, no matter what that means in our lives. As it relates to tattoos, at any given time we might be called to stop getting/doing them and to continue on another path with our tattoos as a continual presence. We might also be called to begin doing them/getting them. We don't know what our own futures hold when we allow Jesus to work through us.

The guarantee is that He will be there, and that we, with the Holy Spirit's guidance and presence, will continue the discipleship, tattoos included. Where there is a need, God will fill it.

We are colorful Light.
